VON BÜLOW

Prince Bernhard von Bülow
(1849-1929) After first rising to the rank of State Secretary in 1897, von Bulow was appointed Chancellor by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 16-Oct-1900. He replaced the aging and ailing Prince Chodwig zu Hohenlohe. A politician by nature, he often manipulated the Emperor to further his own position. He was made a Prince of the German Empire as a result of his involvement in the Morocco Crisis of 1905. His career was a casualty of his own ambition and he was forced to resign from office as a result of the Daily Telegraph affair on 26-Jun-1909.

I am playing my kanklya
lying on the pillows in my castle
carita, carita, carita, di mio,
my songs are just for you
sunshine in my heart
ballads unfolding in my soul
I dance and dance and sing
the melody telling all I feel
the passion of my Germanic blood
longing for fullfillment
drinking the nectar of
love
time after time after time
being one with my past and
one with my future
I am I am I am me now

General Friedrich Wihelm von Bülow " lucky Bülow"
(1755-1816) Despite joining the army at the age of 13, Friederich von Bulow was a talented musician who loved the arts. He became an officer in 1772 and served in the early campaigns against Revolutionary France. Rocked by the loss of his family, he put aside his grief and joined in the battle against Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806. Wellington said that it would not be fair if he did not credit the victory at Waterloo to the timely assistance he had received from Blucher and his Prussians... and he went on to say that "the action of General von Bulow on Napoleon's right flank was MOST DECISIVE." (Wellington to Bathurst, June 19, 1815)

Another leading figure in the reconstruction of the Prussian army, von Bulow put the reforms to the test in 1813 and won the clashes at Luckau, Grossbeeren and Dennewitz. Extremely popular with his men, von Bulow led them through the carnage at Leipzig. During the 100 Days' Campaign it was von Bulow's IV Corps that arrived on the French right flank at Waterloo and sealed victory for the Allies. Returning home, he died in 1816. The Crests

Freiherr Hans Von Bülow
(1830-1894), German composer, celebrated pianist, and the first virtuoso conductor. Born in Dresden, Bülow studied law in Leipzig and Berlin, but turned to a musical career. After studying music with the German composer Richard Wagner and piano with the Hungarian pianist Franz Liszt, he became an outstanding concert pianist. In 1857 he married Liszt's daughter Cosima. She left Bülow in 1869 and became the wife of Richard Wagner. In 1864 Bülow became conductor of the royal opera in Munich, where he conducted the first performance of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde (1865).

"If anyone doesn't care for the way things are in Germany," the Kaiser was moved to declare one day, "let him shake the dust from his shoes."

At the end of von Bulow's final concert in Berlin, he laid down his baton, drew a hankerchief from his pocket, elaborately dusted his shoes - and promptly left for Egypt. Hans von Bulow detested two members of an orchestra named Schultz and Schmidt. One day, he was informed that Schmidt had died. Von Bulow's reply: "Und Schultz?"
He Died Meistersinger (1868). From 1880 to 1885 he was conductor at the court ducal at Meiningen; his orchestra became one of the finest in Europe. The Grave

Cosima von Bülow
(1857-68) Cosima von Bülow, wife of the composer Richard Wagner and director of the Bayreuth Festivals from his death in 1883 to 1908. Cosima was the illegitimate daughter of the composer-pianist Franz Liszt and the countess Marie d'Agoult, who also bore Liszt two other children. Liszt later legitimatized their births; he also provided generously for their education and, in the case of his daughters, their dowries. With her sister, Blandine, Cosima was educated in Paris by the governess of her father's mistress, Princess Wittgenstein, and then at the house of the mother of Hans von Bülow in Berlin. In 1857 she married Hans von Bülow, one of the outstanding conductors of his time and a favourite pupil of Liszt; but, though she encouraged him in his work and remained devoted to him throughout her life, their marriage proved unsatisfactory. She bore him two daughters; the two daughters subsequently born to Cosima--Isolde (1865) and Eva (1867)--were Richard Wagner's children. In 1868, Cosima with her four daughters left von Bülow and went to live with Wagner in Triebschen; they were finally married in 1870. In ! that year, too, Wagner composed the Siegfried Idylle to commemorate the birth of their son, Siegfried (1869-1930). With the passing of Wagner (1883), she took upon herself the management of the Bayreuth Festivals, of which she was art director until 1908, when her son took over. To this self-imposed task she applied her characteristic energies and her continued devotion to Wagner's works. She was the moving force behind the festival plays in both commercial and social matters, influencing the selection of repertory, artists, and style of presentation. She died in Bayreuth in total blindness.

In the course of the next five patrols Bülow sank 14 ships, including the British destroyer HMS Veteran (1,120 tons). His attack on 25 April, 1943 against the British aircraft carrier HMS Biter with two FAT and two G7e torpedoes was not successful, as all the torpedoes detonated some distance away from the British warship. On the outbreak of the First World War he was placed in command of the German Second Army that invaded Belgium. He was later criticized for failing to exploit early victories against the retreating French Army. He remained in control of the German Army on the Western Front and was promoted to field marshal in January 1915. After a heart-attack in March 1915, he returned to Germany and retired from the army in 1916. Karl von Bülow died in Berlin on 31st August 1921. The Grave

Claus von Bülow
Claus von Bulow was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on August 11, 1926. He was the son of a noted playwright, Svend Borberg and Ionna von Bulow Borberg, a beautiful woman who came from a well-to-do family. Claus was educated at private boarding schools and Cambridge University, where he received a law degree. He left the practice of law to work as executive assistant to oil billionaire John Paul Getty. It was at a party at Getty's estate that he met Princess Sunny von Auersperg. The American heiress, born Martha Crawford, had married an Austrian Prince with whom she had two children, Ala and Alexander. Claus fell in love with Sunny who was unhappy in her marriage. Sunny soon divorced her husband and moved back to the United States. On June 6, 1966, she married Claus von Bulow.

"He might look like the devel, but He`s such a cozy old thing... Have you seen him do his imaitation of Queen Victoria"

They seemed a fairy-tale couple: rich, handsome, cultured. But shortly after the birth of their daughter, Cosima, the marriage began to disintegrate. Sunny's reclusiveness and von Bulow's lack of gainful employment were among the differences that eroded their relationship. Claus complained publicly about his dissatisfaction with his marriage and began an affair with a former soap opera actress, Alexandra Isles, in 1979. Isles, a divorcee and mother of one son, insisted that Claus seek a divorce. In December of 1979 and again in December of 1980, Sunny von Bulow fell into a coma. She recovered from the first but the second was irreversible. On both occasions, it was noted that her blood sugar was dangerously low, possibly indicating a high level of insulin in her system. After the second coma, Sunny's children, Ala and Alexander, began an investigation of Claus which led to his indictment for attempted murder. The von Bulow trial drew enormous attention from the public and the media. It was the first time a trial was broadcast on television. After he was acquitted at his second trial, Claus no longer felt at home in America and moved back to England in 1987. He remains close to his daughter Cosima who shares, with Ala and Alexander, a family fortune estimated at one hundred and fifty million dollars.

Vivianna Bülow
Jewellery Designer, Sculptor Vivianna Bülow-Hübe's exhibition "BEYOND TIME - Themes by Torun" continues to tour the world with great success. The recents vernissages in Düsseldorf, Hamburg and and Munich were enthusiastically attended by Subud members and the general public, as well as the press and TV. One of the outstanding pieces in the exhibition is her sculpture titled The Spiral. How this piece came about is one of many fascinating stories that Vivianna recently told me in a two and a half hour video interview. This is how it went:

"I've always been fascinated by the spiral form. If you notice, when you pour cream into coffee it produces the same two armed spiral that is found in a galaxy. Spirals are also found in human DNA.
